John Mellencamp was born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, to Marilyn Lowe and Richard Mellencamp. He was born with spina bifida, for which he had corrective surgery as an infant. He attended Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana, starting in He formed his first band, Crepe Soul, when he was 14 years old.
